It was an incredibly tough week for the racing community with the accident that occurred this past Wednesday at The Meadows. Hunter Myers, unfortunately, was fatally injured in the accident. Although I never met Hunter, I feel like he was someone I knew as a driver, an athlete, and a man who was refining his craft as a professional. I can’t watch The Meadows every day with my work schedule, but I tune in as much as possible when I’m off because I just love harness racing and I consider it my home track. It seems arbitrary now, of course, but I was thinking a few weeks ago how improved he had become as a driver just in the past year and a half. Young guy out there working and getting better every day. Isn’t that what life is really about? Doing what you love, showing up for people, bettering yourself, and enjoying the fruit that comes with that process. I saw a few things today as my X feed was filled with tributes that struck me. One was the pic on Saratoga Harness feed:
Another thing is Jessica Hallett is selling shirts to benefit the family here:
Jessica Hallett@JHallettPhoto
Selling shirts with ALL proceeds going to the Hunter Myers family.
They will be $20 plus shipping (no shipping needed for Saratoga people or most NY tracks I can send with someone). Please reply here or message me sizes and orders so I can get a head count and proper order number. pic.x.com/rhXcVQroL2 3/20/25, 11:53 AM
The last thing was this quote which i came across on my own:
I feel for Hunter’s family and friends who have to deal with this tragedy. As a fan of racing, I wonder how often I’ve cursed a drive or a ride on a horse that “cost me money”. It’s human nature after all. We are passionate about racing, wagering, winning and losing. The term gets tossed around a lot that the drivers and jockeys risk their lives every day in this business, and its easy to discard such a notion until something like this happens. So while Hunter wasn’t directly in my life, he was a small part of it as a driver of countless races that I have watched. He was competing in a sport that entertains me greatly along with many others that are talented enough to be on that stage. So it's hard not to be sad when someone has an accident that takes their life. Perspective comes in many forms, but something like this will add a lot of it to many who follow racing. A greater appreciation of everyone involved will follow. All I can say is I appreciated his talent, I thank him for being a small part of my life and bringing me joy, and I hope he rests in peace.
- We recorded the podcast this week prior to the accident and prior to the news so that is why there was no mention on the broadcast. No spot plays this week as I didn’t want to take away from Wednesday’s tragedy.
